The NFL dropped the hammer on its own officials this week, suspending two referees for unprofessional conduct toward players — but fans across social media say the punishment doesn’t go far enough.

Line judge Jeff Seeman was suspended two games and referee Adrian Hill one game, the league announced, following a pair of ugly player-referee confrontations during Week 5 action.

📱 Watch the viral moment:

The most explosive incident came during the Arizona Cardinals’ clash with the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium. With 4:53 left in the fourth quarter and the Giants clinging to a 27-24 lead, television cameras appeared to catch an official telling Cardinals star tight end Trey McBride to “f*ck himself” during a heated sideline exchange. The clip went nuclear online, racking up hundreds of thousands of views within hours.

McBride, wearing his No. 85 white jersey, was seen jawing with the official after a physical sequence. The audio, picked up by the broadcast’s field microphones, sparked instant outrage among fans who have grown increasingly furious with NFL officiating this season.

The second suspension stemmed from the Dolphins-Vikings matchup, where referee Adrian Hill collided with Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during a play. When Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson extended a hand to help the fallen official up, Hill slapped his hand away and gestured angrily at the player, forcing a second referee to step in and separate them.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported the suspensions, which were handed down by the league’s officiating department for conduct deemed unprofessional and detrimental to the game.

But the reaction from fans has been brutal. Comment sections across Instagram, X, and Facebook are flooded with supporters calling the one and two-game bans a slap on the wrist.

“Refs have been terrible all season and THIS is all they get?” one viral comment read, echoing a sentiment shared by thousands.

Others pointed to the growing sports betting scrutiny around the league, arguing that any hint of referee hostility toward players destroys trust in the integrity of games.

The NFL Referees Association is reportedly planning to challenge the severity of the suspensions, arguing the punishment went beyond what was appropriate — a move that has only poured more gasoline on the fire.

Former players have weighed in too, with several saying they’ve never seen officials speak to players that way on a mic’d-up field in their careers.

For McBride and the Cardinals, the controversy overshadowed what was a hard-fought divisional battle. The tight end has been Arizona’s most reliable weapon this season, and the incident has only added fuel to the perception that officiating is becoming the league’s biggest problem.

The suspensions take effect immediately, with replacement officials filling in for Seeman and Hill this weekend.

One thing is certain: every referee in the league will be thinking twice before opening their mouth near a hot mic for the rest of the season.
