‘You Enjoy Other People Suffering?’: Christina Ricci Asks a MAGA Voter Point-Blank if She’s a Sadist and the Internet Splits in Half

It started as an ordinary political post. A 71-year-old Trump supporter wrote that her family, spread across several states, planned to vote Republican in the midterms and would not bend to what she called “Communist” representation. Then one of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces showed up in the replies, and the whole thing caught fire.

Christina Ricci, 46, did not mince words. “So you’re a sadist then? You enjoy other people suffering?” she asked. “Because that’s what you voted for- more cruelty and suffering for your fellow human beings. And animals actually,” the Addams Family actress concluded. Her reply, posted on Threads, spread quickly to Reddit’s r/Fauxmoi, where a post sharing it drew cheers and pile-ons in roughly equal measure.

On Reddit, some users mocked the voter for misspelling Pennsylvania, while others went well beyond politics. “I cannot emphasize enough how stupid these people are. I have harrowing stories from the past decade here in TX,” one user wrote. The Threads replies were no gentler, with many slamming the older voter and some wishing ill on her livelihood and family.

The split is the story. Ricci’s defenders argue her reply simply named what they see as the consequence of the vote — cruelty toward fellow human beings and animals, in her words — and that softening it would have been dishonest. Her critics argue the opposite: that calling a stranger a sadist over a ballot choice is bullying dressed up as politics, and that it hardens the very people it claims to reach. Both camps agree on one thing only — that two sentences from a famous actress can still set the internet alight.

Some Fans Thought Ricci Went Too Far

But not everyone cheered. “Demonizing others for their political viewpoints. Nice!” one commenter remarked sarcastically on a BuzzFeed article covering the exchange. “To call someone a sadist just because of who they vote for is stereotyping and I didn’t think that was very PC,” sighed another. A third, writing on Threads, went after Ricci herself: “You are a politically ignorant and mediocre actress with a cliffhanger forehead.”

Several people even questioned whether the original account was real, suggesting Ricci had worked herself up over a bot. And one fan made a cooler-headed point about tactics: “It’s the wrong kind of response if it’s not about preaching to the choir, and actually trying to make people like Maga lady reconsider.”

Whether Ricci meant to persuade anyone or simply to rally her own side is an open question. What is not in doubt is that a two-line reply turned an ordinary voter post into a referendum on how politics gets argued online — and neither side looks ready to soften its tone.
