Facing a team that was blown out of their building last Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs hope to stay undefeated by continuing the Colts’ losing trend. However, Indy is wounded, and so the Chiefs need to play a better game this week, especially in the passing game, to go 2-0 on the season.
At game time, we will know how the rest of the AFC West fared, and depending on those outcomes, the Chiefs could land anywhere from first to third in the standings. Tonight, the Indianapolis Colts were embarrassed by the Baltimore Ravens on their turf and looked bad on both sides of the ball.
Yes, Colts Quarterback Daniel Jones successfully returned after rupturing his Achilles heel last season, and Jonathan Taylor made some big plays. Still, their defense couldn’t contain Lamar Jackson’s accuracy and his rushing attack led by Derrick Henry.
The Chiefs can easily surpass what the Ravens did offensively. To do that, Patrick Mahomes, who had a successful debut against the Denver Broncos Monday night, needs to find a quicker game rhythm in the passing game.
Indy’s defense won’t match the firepower of the Broncos, so their revamped offensive line should be able to handle anything that Colts Defensive Coordinator Lou Anarumo can throw at the Chiefs. Mahomes has struggled against him in the past, including KC’s overtime win last season and when he was running the Bengals defense.
If this team starts slow in the passing game, at least they can lean on running back Kenneth Walker, who ate up the Broncos’ defense with 191 all-purpose yards. Yes, he’s the key to the offense right now, but getting the receivers more involved in the offense could be the stepping stone to becoming an elite group in the AFC.
I know the Chiefs will not take the Colts lightly, and Head Coach Andy Reid won’t let his team treat this game with any complacency. As we saw last week, the Chiefs were focused and energized, and with consecutive prime-time home games in Kansas City, the Arrowhead sauce helped deliver the Chiefs’ season-opening win.
So much went right last week, but we need to remind ourselves this is a young team, relying on the new kids on the roster to keep making big plays. It’s a lot to ask, but this is the best coaching staff Reid has had since he arrived in Kansas City.
The national media has said a lot about the brilliance of the Chiefs’ game plan over Denver. Equally complimenting the return of Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator and the master of the defense, Steve Spagnuolo, proved too much for KC’s division rival.
The Colts have their collective back against the wall. With three teams in the AFC South losing opening weekend, they need to get back in the win column. Unlike a year ago, when they started 8-2 and were the top seed and a lock for the postseason, this team has lost its way.
After their loss to the Chiefs, the wheels fell off, and they ended the season on a seven-game losing streak. After losing week one, they have something to prove to avoid nine straight defeats. It won’t be easy, and they are not as talented as the Chiefs, but Daniel Jones is patient enough to find the soft spots in the secondary.
Further, Jonathan Taylor could duplicate what Walker did to the Broncos and carve out a big game against the Chiefs. Last season they bottled him up at Arrowhead, so he should be extra motivated to avoid similar results Sunday Night.
For the Chiefs, this game boils down to how they bounce back from their win over the Broncos and come out firing on all cylinders to avoid a week-one letdown. I don’t expect that to happen, as this team has a clear focus this season.
To avoid an upset, the Chiefs’ offensive line needs to play as well as they did last week, and the defense, which should have Mansoor Delane back on the field, needs to make Daniel Jones as uncomfortable as possible in the pocket.
If they can force turnovers, the winning script of last week should continue Sunday night. Kansas City must force the action on both sides of the ball and dictate the outcome as early as possible in this AFC matchup.
Should that occur, Kansas City can take their show on the road against the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders with confidence before their early-season bye week. With only six home games left in the 2026 season, any slip-ups, especially against the Colts, could muddy their goals to win the AFC West and be the top seed in the conference.
