The Kansas City Chiefs appear to be bringing the band back together and laying the future of their offense in Eric Bieniemy’s hands. With no interviews outside of Kansas City, EB gets another chance to run KC’s offense.
As news leaked out this morning, the Kansas City Chiefs let it be known they had asked for permission to speak to the Chicago Bears running backs coach, Eric Bieniemy. The former Chiefs offensive coordinator replaces Matt Nagy, who is the frontrunner to become the head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
Per sources, the Kansas City Chiefs had set their sights on giving Eric Bieniemy another chance in Kansas City once they felt strongly that Nagy was heading to a bigger coaching gig. By going back into the familiarity playbook, Andy Reid is gambling that EB has learned a few things that can bring the Chiefs offense back to its former heights of success.
The team is also planning on hiring veteran wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, and that’s an outstanding addition to the staff. If the Chiefs are going to balance their offense, they need more from their receivers.
Still, this is a curious move if Reid isn’t willing to give up some control of the offense. The reason other candidates might have balked at the chance to come to Kansas City and coach Patrick Mahomes is that Reid controls 51% of the decision-making process. Some say it’s 100%, but that remains to be seen.
Bieniemy left the Chiefs after their Super Bowl LVII victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. He moved to UCLA as their offensive coordinator. Sadly the Bruins offense was ranked 117th but their talent was depleated.
The Washington Commanders hired him as their new OC in 2024, and their offense ranked 21st, but they had a plethora of starting quarterbacks.
Last season, he was the Bears’ running backs coach, and he served under Ben Johnson. I’m sure the Chiefs felt he learned a significant amount working with the likely NFL Coach of the Year. Johnson is a master of the run game, and with his preference for having his quarterback under center, this could be a modification the Chiefs adopt in 2026.
On the downside, some don’t like the move, and I remain skeptical. However, Reid was never going to bring in an outsider to assist with the offense. At least he’s changing some glaring holes in his position coaches, with more likely to come this week.
Patrick Mahomes stated last week that he wanted the new OC to bring energy, accountability, and fresh ideas to the team every day. Mahomes has always been a team player, but he was forceful in his comments, and let’s hope Reid was listening.
The deal is expected to be finalized on Tuesday.
