With the deadline approaching, the Kansas City Chiefs, per Jeremy Fowler, will exercise their fifth-year options on both their 2022 first-round draft picks.

On Tuesday, per Jeremy Fowler at ESPN, it was reported that the Kansas City Chiefs will ensure both 2022 first-round picks, CB Trent McDuffie and DE George Karlaftis, will remain with the Chiefs through the 2026 season.
In exercising their fifth-year options, the organization will now focus on long-term deals for both defensive players. At the moment, the Chiefs are working on finalizing a deal with All-Pro Guard, Trey Smith.

Once that’s done this summer, the Chiefs will move toward extending McDuffie, then Karlaftis. General Manager Brett Veach indicated in his pre-draft press conference that the intent, once the Smith deal is done, would be to work on extensions for the jewels of his 2022 draft class.

McDuffie was an All-Pro in 2023, and Karlaftis has become a dominating edge rusher for the Chiefs over the last two years. The pair has two Super Bowl rings together, and based on their respective positions, will demand a high salary.
Fortunately, the Chiefs’ cap situation after the 2025 season will undergo a significant change, allowing Kansas City to work out long-term deals that maintain roster flexibility.

There is no doubt that both defenders are considered homegrown talent, and by exercising this option, all parties understand the process ahead. McDuffie will earn $13.6 million in 2026, and Karlaftis will earn $15.1 million.
This weekend, the Chiefs will have their first look at their 2025 draft class. Kansas City will conduct its rookie mini-camp, where undrafted free agents and invited players will receive a long look in front of the coaching staff.
