On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs added 13 players to their practice squad. Now that additional players have been set free, they added a trio of players, including a deceptive, quick running back and one of their big-time preseason performers. So who did the Chiefs sign?
As I stated multiple times, the 53-man roster and the practice squad are always works in progress. After signing 13 players Monday, the Chiefs added three more players: CB Kador Kohou, Tackle Ethan Driskell, and former Atlanta Falcons running back Nate Carter.
The addition of Carter, who had a terrific preseason for the Falcons, adds to a crowded running back room on the 53-man roster and the practice squad. They already brought back Jaydn Ott to the practice squad, and the addition of Carter could mean several things for the Chiefs.
First, the rumor that the Chiefs will be a run-first, pass-second offense until they feel comfortable letting Patrick Mahomes be himself in game situations could be the primary reason for his addition to the practice squad.
Second, it may be insurance, since the running back room last season was banged up and injured, with zero depth behind Kareem Hunt. Again, the entire unit has only one carryover, Brashard Smith, who made the 53-man roster. With Kenneth Walker and rookie Emmitt Johnson, they make an interesting and dynamic trio on the depth chart.
Once he’s fully recovered from his knee injury and can get back into game shape, cornerback Kador Kohou remains a viable candidate to be elevated to the 53-man roster. He was one of my favorite additions, and I think he can really help the back end of the defense.
Driskell needs to get into game shape, but he’s certainly solid insurance for the Chiefs’ tackle position.
Lastly, in a corresponding move, the Chiefs did bring back defensive tackle Marcus Harris, who had an impressive preseason for Kansas City. He’s now the final piece of the 16-man taxi squad. To make room for Harris, the team cut DT Cole Brevard from the practice squad.
