Chiefs Trey Smith Makes it Official

Late Sunday night, Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro Guard Trey Smith officially joined the team for the 2025 season. Yet, this might not be the only signing the team announces at the onset of free agency.

After placing the nonexclusive franchise tender on Two-Time Super Bowl Champion Trey Smith, there was some question about what could happen next. Although the two sides hope to reach an extension this week, Smith did sign his franchise tender, making him the highest-paid guard in the NFL.

His cap hit for 2025 will be $23.4 Million, but that number could significantly reduce if they can come to an extension. Both parties have the sentiment and motivation to get something done. Smith wants to remain in Kansas City.

General Manager Brett Veach handled that move, and there are reports that he will be active today when the legal tampering period begins at 11:00 AM CST and that he could sign a free-agent left tackle.

Per Albert Breer, the Chiefs are interested in Pittsburgh Steelers tackle Dan Moore, Jr. and San Francisco’s tackle Jaylon Moore. The price tag will be similar to Ronnie Stanley’s money from the Baltimore Ravens: three years, $20 million per season.

I like Jaylon Moore’s upside better. He’s been Trent Williams’s primary backup, so he had a good mentor. The Steelers Moore struggled a lot this past season protecting Russell Wilson, and I’m not sure he’s worth the money some are reporting he could get in the open market today.

Kansas City is also talking to the agent of D.J. Humphries as another option should the Chiefs fail to land one of the top tackles.

Either way, the Chiefs have already been active, trading Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears for a 2026 fourth-round pick and retaining Wide Receiver Hollywood Brown and Linebacker Nick Bolton.
