Chiefs Streak Ends as Eagles Win Super Bowl LIX

This wasn’t the Super Bowl that Kansas City Chiefs fans anticipated. Still, the Philadelphia Eagles arrived ready to play, and from the opening snap to the final tick of the clock, they proved to be the superior team. The Three-Peat dream ends as the Eagles defeat the Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl LIX.

I’m not sure anyone expected the Philadelphia Eagles to dominate the Kansas City Chiefs, but they did so convincingly. Without a single blitz, the Eagles harassed and pressured Patrick Mahomes throughout the game. With two interceptions and a deteriorating offensive line, the future Hall of Famer didn’t have the time to feel comfortable in the pocket.

I believed the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LV loss would be the worst in their history. However, the Philadelphia Eagles’ unexpected victory over the defending back-to-back Super Bowl champions was as remarkable as it was surprising.

From the opening drive, Mahomes had no time to get into any offensive rhythm. The Eagles sacked him six times on the night, and the Chiefs’ offensive line could never protect their superstar quarterback.

On the flip side, the Chiefs contained Saquon Barkley, who had 25 carries for 57 yards, but no answers for quarterback Jalen Hurts, who threw two touchdowns on 17 of 22 completions. He threw and ran the ball brilliantly, totaling a team-high 72 yards. He was as focused and dialed in as any quarterback the Chiefs faced all season.

It’s difficult to understand how Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid failed to adjust when things fell apart in the first half. He was outcoached by Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who ended his 0-8 streak against Mahomes.

He endured a beating but threw two touchdowns to Xavier Worthy, including a 50-yard bomb. He has emerged as the Chiefs’ number-one receiver. Still, he will likely need a week of cold baths to heal the bruising.

We will have plenty of time to analyze this loss and its potential impact on the 2025 squad, but this is not the season’s conclusion that anyone expected.

Still, I won’t downplay the Chiefs’ winning two of the last three Super Bowls. On Sunday, they ran into a buzzsaw. The Eagles played their best game of the season against a strong football team that had an off night.

Mahomes is now 3-2 in Super Bowls, and his two losses were in blowout fashion, so he’ll have a lot to motivate him in the next phase of his career.

The Chiefs’ run over the last seven seasons remains legendary. A couple of losses in the Super Bowl may slightly undermine that dominance, but it shouldn’t. The Chiefs have nothing to be ashamed of in losing to a great football team.
