With Love of Game Restored, DeAndre Hopkins is Super Bowl Ready

Among all the stories leading up to Super Bowl LIX, one focuses on Kansas City Chiefs receiver DeAndre Hopkins, his mother, and the godmother who raised him. Their narrative is marked by tragedy, yet it is filled with hope and presents an opportunity that brought DeAndre Hopkins and his family to Kansas City.

On opening night, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins candidly shared his waning enthusiasm for playing with the Tennessee Titans mid-season during a heartfelt conversation with then-General Manager Ran Carthon. The two participated in a challenging discussion, and by the end of the meeting, the Titans traded him to the Chiefs the following day.

“That’s the first time in my career where I was like, ‘Man, I’m almost losing love for this game,” Hopkins said.

With a renewed passion for the game and the opportunity to join the back-to-back Super Bowl champions, he will be playing in his first Super Bowl. The 2013 first-round pick has never advanced beyond the divisional round of the playoffs.

He did that by helping the Chiefs defeat the team that drafted him, the Houston Texans.  Now, he gets to share this marvelous ride with his mother, Sabrina Greenlee, who has survived an act of violence that left her blind from the incident in 2002.

Hopkins grew up without a father, and to that point of the accident, Greenlee did all she could to provide for her children. Once that tragedy unfolded, DeAndre had to grow up fast, and he’s been at his mother’s side ever since.

He has included her in every step of his college and NFL career. He hands the ball to his mother in the stands when he scores a touchdown. He has done well financially in the NFL and can now care for his entire family.

Nevertheless, he has never lost sight of how difficult his childhood was. Before attending the Super Bowl, he conveyed a heartfelt message for children who might feel as he did at their age.

Hopkins has changed his career path, and the Chiefs Kingdom has embraced him and his mother, Sabrina, with open hearts and enthusiastic support. She wrote a book about her experiences titled “Grant Me Vision”.

She has organized events in Kansas City to promote the book for which her son, DeAndre, wrote the foreword. Their relationship embodies admiration and hope for others who have faced tragedies.

I knew nothing about his past or his mother when Hopkins arrived in Kansas City. But after reading stories about the two of them, Hopkins is atop my list of Chiefs players I hope finally get their Super Bowl ring.

Sometimes, good guys don’t win, but Hopkins has been a winner for a long time but never a Lombardi winner. Yes, he does have an AFC Championship on his resume, but the eleven-year veteran has a chance to join fellow 2013 draftee Travis Kelce in the winner’s circle Sunday evening.

Hopkins often talked about visualizing his trade to the Chiefs and getting to the Super Bowl. Though his postseason numbers didn’t match his regular-season success, he understands his role and will do whatever his team asks.

For the first time in his career, he’s in the catbird seat, positioned exactly where he wanted to be after deciding to come to Kansas City.
