Chiefs Keep the Hot Hand at Tackle

On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs were making last-minute adjustments to their divisional-round matchup against the Houston Texans on Saturday. The biggest question for this game would be what Head Coach Andy Reid decided to do with his offensive line.

When the Kansas City Chiefs entered a three-game stretch of games in eleven days, Wanya Morris struggled at left tackle. So Head Coach Andy Reid asked veteran Left Guard Joe Thuney to move to left tackle after a successful stint against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The combination of Thuney and Guard Mike Galiendo has given Patrick Mahomes time to throw the ball and pick apart opposing defenses. The Chiefs offense was on fire in December, and Thuney stabilizing the left tackle position has been a key ingredient to that success.

So, Head Coach Andy Reid decided to stay with the hot hand on Friday.

He’s doing so even with DJ Humphries healthy and ready to resume his role on the offensive line. However, Reid feels Thuney gives Mahomes the best protection, and that’s the bottom line.

Humphries, who tweaked his hamstring in the Chargers game, played some of the game in Denver against the Broncos. The results were mixed, and now he becomes a very valuable backup should the Chiefs suffer an injury in the postseason.

It was the right move for the offense, and Thuney has excelled since the move. He is an upgrade over Morris, and his experience as a premier offensive lineman continues to expand. In his previous start against the Texans, neither of their premier pass rushers beat Thuney, as Mahomes had plenty of time to navigate in the pocket.
