The Kansas City Chiefs are the best team in the NFL, and with ‘Black Monday’ arriving in typical rabid-fire style, the Chiefs could lose a key executive and coaches as teams begin setting up interviews for the upcoming hiring window in the NFL.
As the top seed in the AFC with a Bye Week, NFL teams can conduct Video Interviews with prospective coaching candidates. The Kansas City Chiefs have been quiet in the coaching cycle in recent years, but that is expected to change this season.
Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy has received a formal request to interview for the New York Jets vacancy. Rumors suggest he’ll also speak to the New Orleans Saints. However, he might not be the only coach interviewing with the NFC South team.
ChiefsBlitz.com has learned the Saints may also request to speak with Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Both Nagy and Spags have been NFL head coaches before with the Bears and Rams.
Spags is the game’s top defensive coordinator, and while he would be a significant loss, he would also be a big gain for any NFL team looking to stabilize the coaching room. He’s learned much since his time with the Rams, indicating a desire to be head coach again.
The Chiefs have already made him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL, which likely surpasses some of the lower-paid head coaches in the NFL. So, a team won’t be able to get him cheaply.
As for Nagy, he took the Chicago Bears to two playoff appearances with Mitch Trubinsky as his starting quarterback. Though he gets a lot of flak from Chiefs fans, he’s managed a lot of chaos, roster defections, and injuries to be a part of the Chief’s recent success.
Before taking the Bears job, he worked with Patrick Mahomes in his rookie season, and under his tutelage in 2017, that was paramount to the growth of the game’s best quarterback.
Chiefs Assistant GM Matt Borgonzi will interview with Jets owner Woody Johnson in Florida this week, aiding his cause in the interview process in New York. Borgonzi has close ties with Mike Vrabel, but it appears he’ll land in New England.
Borgonzi and Nagy would be a terrific tandem in New York, with the Jets needing a new quarterback. They aren’t the household flash names the Big Apple covets. Instead, they are solid football men who could rebuild the roster and stabilize the organization.
