Chiefs Designate Jaylen Watson to Return

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to get healthy. As they head into the postseason, it appears all but Rashee Rice won’t return to the playoff roster. Now comes the news: the Chiefs are getting one of their best defenders back for January football.

On Monday, Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid indicated that cornerback Jaylen Watson was a long shot to return. However, that tune changed as the Chiefs designated Watson to return from injury on Friday morning.

Watson broke his fibula in October, and it was bleak he could make it back this season. However, he’s been dedicated and diligent in rehab, forcing the Chiefs to give him a chance to play in the postseason.

Before his injury, Watson was on track to become a Pro Bowl performer. Since his absence, Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has made the most of his young secondary, but at 15-1, it’s hard to argue that he got the most from the back end of his defense.

Now, Watson will need time to get into the flow of the defense, and I suspect he could be ready by the time the Chiefs play in the divisional round. If he is healthy, his addition to the secondary rotation gives Spags more depth to work with in devising game plans against the Chiefs post-season opponents.
