The Chiefs are on their way to Las Vegas to prepare for their AFC West showdown with the Raiders. The team announced it had elevated a wide receiver from its practice squad.
Heading into training camp, wide receivers Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross had plenty of momentum to make the 53-man roster. However, neither did much in the pre-season, which allowed Montrell Washington to show what he could do. He had an outstanding pre-season game against the Chicago Bears, which likely helped his cause for today’s promotion.
The former fifth-round pick of the Denver Broncos has been with the Chiefs since August 2023. He’s bounced back and forth on and off the practice squad, but the Chiefs felt he was the best choice to promote with the injury to JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Now, there is no guarantee that he will be among the active players in Las Vegas on Sunday. However, with the recent addition of DeAndre Hopkins to the Chiefs and the re-emergence of Mecole Hardman on offense, Washington can also play special teams as a kick-off return man.
This move likely means that Remigio and Ross will be hard-pressed to get on the field this season for the Chiefs. Both have talent, but when the lights are on, they struggle either in route running or consistently catching the football.
Remigo had a lousy game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first preseason game, and that’s carried into his stint on the practice squad. Ross has extreme talent, but he’s limited regarding route running.
Either way, Washington is the next man up, but he’s also the best of three receivers available to Head Coach Andy Reid.
This is the Chiefs’ second promotion from their practice squad this week. Cornerback Keith Taylor was activated with Jaylen Watson’s likely season-ending injury.
