Earlier Monday, Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice had a scope done on his knee. There was some damage to his LCL, but it appears to be minor. Depending on which insider you listen to this evening, he could or could not be back in 2024.
There was hope, and depending on whether you subscribe to Adam Schefter or Ian Rappaport, Rashee Rice’s 2024 season is likely but not definitively over. On Tuesday, he’ll have surgery to repair the damage, which is not as severe as once feared.
So, is there hope he can return this season?
Pessimistically, it’s doubtful, but if reports are accurate, the Rice narrative is leaning toward the out-for-the-season category. Yet, we won’t know until the surgery to repair his LCL is completed. Either way, the Chiefs’ had hoped Rice would return this season appears to be in doubt. Generally, the recovery time is three to four months. So it’s remote, but maybe he could be available for Super Bowl LIX should the Chiefs make it that far.
So what’s next?
It’s clear the Kansas City Chiefs have to add a veteran receiver, and plenty of options are available. The list includes Amari Cooper, Deontae Johnson, Darius Slayton, Jalin Hyatt, Tee Higgins, DeAndre Hopkins, and, to a lesser degree, DeVante Adams.
Either way, this is a big blow to the Chiefs, and replacing Rice’s production and chemistry with Patrick Mahomes can’t be done. That means, much like last season, it’s going to be wide receiver by committee.
General Manager Brett Veach has some extra draft capital in 2025 and enough salary cap to make a move for a high-priced wide receiver. Either way, with Bye Week coming up this week, it would benefit the Chiefs to make this move before the team returns to practice next Monday.
