Chiefs Make Creed Humphrey Highest Paid Center

Before the start of the Kansas City Chiefs preseason game against the Chicago Bears, NFL Network reports that Center, Creed Humphries and the team has agreed to a contract extension.

The Kansas City Chiefs are paying the price for the success of their 2021 Draft class that yielded three starters. One of them, Center Creed Humphrey, will be the first from that group to get a contract extension.

According to Ian Rappaport, Humphrey’s new contract is a four-year deal worth $72 Million with $50 Million i guarantees. The new contract makes the Chiefs starting center the highest paid at his position.

There was little doubt General Manger, Brett Veach had a chore in retaining Humphrey, Trey Smith and Nick Bolton, but it appears he’s going to attempt the trifecta from his prized 2021 class.

ChiefsBlitz.com has learned the team hopes to complete a deal wtith Guard Trey Smith before the start of the regular season. Now that Humphrey has his deal, Smith, who wants to stay with the Chiefs long term, appear to be in sync with the organizations desire to make that happen.

Guard Landon Dickerson signed a four-year extension worth $84 Million, so Smith and his agents will be looking for a similar number. On the plus side, Guard Joe Thuney is set to have a massive cap hit in 2025 , the final year of his deal. If the Chiefs, need extra cash to pay Smith, it’s possible the team cuts Thuney in the spring.

With Thuney playing at a high level, it’s possible he could extend his contract and lower his cap hit next year. If not, the Chiefs will have to hope that rookie draft pick C.J. Hanson can start next season.

Either way the first domino has fallen.
