One of the team’s most significant off-season needs was who would back-up Patrick Mahomes this season. The Kansas City Chiefs answered that question late Monday night by signing veteran Carson Wentz.
Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid has always believed that having experienced backups at the quarterback position strengthened his roster. On Monday night, former second pick of the 2016 NFL Draft Carson Wentz signed a one-year deal.
The Chiefs flirtation with Wentz has been ongoing. Though they had a strong interest in him before signing Blaine Gabbert to back up Mahomes in 2023, they were able to sign him the second time around.
Wentz is a solid addition to the Chiefs, and honestly, as far as back-ups for Mahomes, this is the best quarterback combination Kansas City has had under Reid’s tenure thus far.
The good news for the Chiefs is they get an experienced quarterback with playoff experience and a player who has played quarterback at the highest level. Further, if Mahomes must miss any games, Wentz is a perfect fit for Reid’s offense.
Since leaving the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2020 season, he’s spent one year each as the starter in Indianapolis and Washington before being a backup last season with the Los Angeles Rams.
In other Chiefs news, there are rumblings that Kansas City is attempting to re-sign Mike Danna to the team. He was a bright spot for the Chief’s defense in 2023, and with no significant offers from other NFL teams for his services, it’s possible he could come back to the Chiefs on a one-year deal.
The Rashee Rice saga has entered its fourth day, and news out of Dallas is still minimal. Rice has retained legal counsel, but he has yet to be charged with any crimes and remains a person of interest in Saturday’s car accident, in which he is alleged to be involved.
