Chiefs Intend to Place Franchise Tag on Sneed

On Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach addressed the media at the NFL combine. The organization is full speed ahead to get ready for the 2024 NFL season, and the rumors suggest Kansas City intends to use its Franchise Tag on their star cornerback.

As the Super Bowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs were at the forefront of the NFL Combine today. Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach made the media rounds today, and they certainly didn’t shy away from the roster decisions ahead.

Brett Veach clarified that re-signing Defensive Tackle Chris Jones was their top priority, and Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed was a close second. We’ve heard that Jones and the Chiefs are closing in on a new contract.

As for Sneed, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Kansas City has informed the Saint Louis Group, which represents Sneed, that they intend to place the franchise tag on their star cornerback. In addition, the agent has been permitted to seek a trade if they can’t come together on a new contract.

The good news is that both sides believe this is the fairest way to strike a deal. Sneed can see which teams might be interested in his services. One team making a big push is the Philadelphia Eagles. Kansas City would have to be compensated with meaningful draft picks to facilitate a trade, but they are open to that possibility. Conversely, the Chiefs, Eagles, or any other team must agree to a new contract number that works for all parties.

Veach will spend most of the week talking to agents to sign as many internal free agents as the salary cap warrants, and players from other teams set to hit the open market in March.

The Chiefs have many free agents and won’t be able to sign them all, but they can create more cap space by extending contracts with Travis Kelce, Joe Thuney, and Justin Reid. Veach can also move some Mahomes contracts around to create more space.

One thing is certain Reid and Veach understand the opportunity to three-peat, and KC’s General Manager said that was the goal this season. For that to happen, he’ll need to be aggressive in free agency, securing a wide receiver, running back, and a linebacker to replace Willie Gay, who appears headed to free agency.

Whatever happens in March will likely come together this week in Indianapolis.
