On Friday afternoon, the NFL lifted the six-game suspension for Charles Omenihu, who has officially rejoined the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL also granted the team a roster exemption so they can evaluate him before they place him on the 53-man roster.
The biggest surprise of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 5-1 record continues to be the play of the defense. They lead the league in fewest points scored and have ascended as a top-five defensive unit. Good news for Chiefs fans and bad news for the rest of the NFL, the team’s premier free agent signing, Charles Omenihu is back with Kansas City.
Omenihu was suspended by the NFL for an off-the-field issue last year. The Chiefs were aware of the possible suspension before they signed him to a two-year, $16 million dollar deal. The former San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman was highly coveted during free agency. General Manager, Brett Veach was aggressive in signing Omenihu.
The Chiefs defensive line has been amongst the best in the NFL this season. Defensive Coordinator, Steve Spagnuola has a solid combination of youth and experience. Yet, in adding Omenihu, who can play inside or outside, he becomes a perfect tandem for Chris Jones.
This season Jones has been given the flexibility to play any given snap inside or outside. Omenihu has the same abilities. If the two can get on the same page defensively, seizing up the opposing offensive line, the two should be a lethal duo.
From all accounts, Omenihu who has been very engaging and positive on social media, has been working out and staying in shape. As part of that suspension, he’s not allowed to have any contact with the Chiefs. Well, that’s all changed now.
Players don’t have to report until Monday and Omenihu might be the first man in the building.
