What’s Next for Chiefs and Rashee Rice?

The Kansas City Chiefs have done their best to address their postseason absence by reshaping and rebuilding their 2026 roster. Although they addressed the wide receiver position in the NFL Draft, it appears that, after the latest news on Rashee Rice, the Chiefs will need to expand the wide receiver room before training camp.

On Tuesday, the Dallas District Attorney indicated that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice would spend the next 30 days in jail. After failing his mandatory drug test, which was triggered by a THC indication, he will miss both the OTA sessions and the Chiefs’ mandatory Mini-Camp.

However, that wasn’t the only news. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rice underwent knee surgery that will keep him out for at least 60 days. That means the Chiefs will need to add another wide receiver before training camp. If Rice is with the team in July when camp opens, he’ll be on the PUP list, and from there the Chiefs could place him on injured reserve, effectively ending his final season in a Chiefs uniform.

Kansas City won’t save much if they cut him, and if they have reached their limit on Rice, they could prevent him from playing for any NFL team in 2026. On the flip side, they could place him on Injured Reserve with a designation to return.

However, the news of his immediate incarceration isn’t good news for the team’s new Wide Receivers Coach, Chad O’Shea. As he looks at his wide receiver room at the moment, it consists of Tyquan Thornton, Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals, and Cyrus Allen. He’s going to have his work cut out for him with this group, and if they don’t add a veteran like Tyreek Hill, he’s going to need to get these four receivers up to speed quickly.

We don’t know whether Royals, who was drafted to replace Rice, will see the field this season. Rookie Cyrus Allen is a multi-talented receiver who could make an impact on the offense, but both he and the Royals are complete unknowns at this stage of the offseason.

Even though the Chiefs plan to shift to a heavy running team, Patrick Mahomes needs receivers he can count on. With the offensive shift, route running will be paramount to this offense’s success. Even though Travis Kelce will return for what could be his final NFL season, Mahomes needs more downfield options.

Rice has been given every chance by the organization that selected him in the second round in 2023. He was a key component of the Chiefs’ run to Super Bowl LVII. Injuries and suspensions since his breakout rookie season have torpedoed his promising NFL career.

Now facing rehab in jail and missing the next two months, the Chiefs must roll the dice on Rice and decide whether he’s worn out his welcome or is worth rehabilitating one more time. As a free agent after the season, you can only assume he won’t get another contract with the Chiefs.

To be honest, that’s a down-the-road decision, but immediate concerns about the wide receiver room suggest to me that Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach is on the phone trying to add a veteran to the mix.

Now, if it fails to add Hill or another veteran, undrafted rookie Jeff Caldwell was the teammate of Cyrus Allen at Cincinnati. If he has a strong showing, he could exceed Allen’s expectations in 2026.

Time will tell what the Chiefs will do, but with surgery, the expectation that Rice could be available at some point in training camp, and another off-season incident, those factors might tip the scales on his immediate future with Kansas City.

Rice brought all this on himself and, sadly, has yet to learn the life lessons needed to rise above his costly mistakes.
