The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Las Vegas on Sunday to begin Super Bowl week in their quest to defeat the San Francisco 49ers for the second time in four years. With the offense finding its groove, a former 49ers and current Chief could mark his return for the big game.
On Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs designated Running Back Jerrick ‘Jet’ McKinnon to return from injury. Thus, his practice window is now open, and Head Coach Andy Reid might get a valued offensive piece back on the field for Super Bowl LVIII.
McKinnon used to play for the San Francisco 49ers, but injuries derailed his career. He’s found a home in Kansas City, and despite having core and groin surgery in December, he’ll be back on the practice field with the Chiefs in Las Vegas.
If he returns, he will vault Clyde Edwards-Helaire in playing time. McKinnon has been a solid third-down back for Patrick Mahomes. He can run, catch and block. Last Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, CEH struggled with pass protection, and he didn’t offer much in the running game.
Though it’s far too early to see if he can get into playing shape this week, his addition to the offense means Reid can be more creative with the play calling against the 49ers.
The Chiefs have revamped their offense, and Reid has relied heavily on Isiah Pacheco, who continues to deliver in the postseason. Yet, he is nursing a toe injury, and adding McKinnon to spell him without altering the offense is excellent for the Chiefs and Mahomes.
