Andy Reid announced on Friday that star Running Back Isiah Pacheco had minor shoulder surgery on Wednesday. Will this affect the rest of his season?
Injuries are starting to affect the Kansas City Chiefs and their hopes for a better playoff seed. Last week, in their 20-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Running Back Isiah Pacheco didn’t play due to a shoulder injury. It was revealed Friday by Head Coach Andy Reid that Pacheco had minor surgery on that shoulder.
Reid did emphasize that Pacheco was on the practice field Friday and participated in the team’s walk-through in preparation for their Sunday afternoon contest against the New England Patriots. Further, he mentioned Pacheco could play on Christmas Day against the Las Vegas Raiders.
In other news, Reid said that wide receiver Justyn Ross would not be activated this week. The Chiefs have a one-week roster exemption, and the team would take that to see if anyone is a candidate to go on Injured Reserve after Sunday’s game at New England.
The news on Pacheco sounds bad and could be bad for Kansas City in the long term. His in-your-face running style, though impressive to watch, shows his body can’t continue to be the battering ram that makes Pacheco one of the game’s best running backs.
Pacheco only knows one speed, and his body might not take that kind of punishment at some point. I’ve often said the three guys this team can’t lose on offense are Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Isiah Pacheco.
Last week, the Chiefs really needed their best running back on the field. Though the combination of Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerrick McKinnon did an admirable job, they are only part of Pacheco’s overall.
In other injury news, Left Tackle Donovan Smith will miss his second straight game for the Chiefs. Rookie Wanya Morris has done a solid job in replacing Smith, and it’s likely even if he is healthy down the stretch, that Reid will stay with the rookie left tackle.
Sunday is a big game for the Chiefs, and they must win this football game to have any hopes of ending the season atop the AFC.
