After much speculation and social media buzz, the Kansas City Chiefs updated the media on left tackle Josh Simmons’ back injury. While it offers clarity, his return timeline to the starting lineup remains undefined. However, it does appear he has the support of his starting quarterback, who has seen firsthand his commitment to the rehab process

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs began their week of preparation for their AFC West showdown against the undefeated Las Vegas Raiders. Head Coach Andy Reid said every player would practice except left tackle Josh Simmons. However, after being coy on Monday when asked about Simmons, he told reporters that Simmons is suffering from a bulging disc.
The back pain began in training camp, and after a second opinion confirmed disc issues, Simmons has been rehabbing his back at the facility and doing what he can to avoid surgery. Reid indicated it likely won’t be the case because he’s making progress.

Though some question the information flow, the Chiefs’ medical staff has guided Simmons through a regimen that will likely get him back on the field in October. Whether that’s before Halloween or sooner will depend on the pain tolerance Simmons can endure.

For anyone with a bulging disc, pain levels vary, but as a 300-pound NFL offensive tackle, Simmons needs to feel confident he can play at a high level. Make no mistake: the Chiefs need him back at left tackle.
Khalil Benson has done a great job filling in at left tackle, but he began training camp as the likely starter at right tackle. Veteran Jaylen Moore has been playing in Benson’s spot on the offensive line.
For those who still doubt that Simmons is at the facility working out, future Hall of Fame quarterback Patrick Mahomes put those rumblings to rest.
“I’ve been seeing him, and he’s putting in the work. He’s doing whatever it takes to get on the field as quickly as possible, and hopefully that’s a little quicker rather than later,” Mahomes stated emphatically.
