Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid gave fans the best news they could get today. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been cleared by his surgeon and the Chiefs’ medical staff to begin training camp as a full participant. So what does this mean for the Superhuman quarterback?
Though reports indicated earlier this week that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes could be cleared to be a full participant at the onset of training camp, which begins on the field Saturday morning in St. Joseph, Missouri. Reid seemed business as usual in speaking to the media today to announce that his quarterback would be able to practice at full speed if they choose.
Now, the fact Mahomes has been cleared doesn’t mean he’s in game shape or ready to play a football game in August or September. However, since Reid is cognizant of organizing his practices to methodically grow in drills throughout camp, Mahomes should get enough of a ramp-up to consider playing him in a preseason game in August.
In other Chiefs news, Reid said that Wide Receiver Rashee Rice was also medically cleared after his clean-up surgery to repair some loose cartilage in his knee. With his incaracartion last month complete, Mahomes indicated that he was working with Rice every day in Kansas City in the weight roioom.
Last year’s second-round draft pick, Omar Norman Lott, is expected to return to practice in the next week or two, but he’ll begin Camp on the PUP List.
Reid also indicated that the Chiefs plan for free agent signee L’Jarius Sneed would get a slow rollout to ensure his knee is solid for the regular season. There was no definitive indication that 2026 first-round pick, Cornerback Mansoor Delane, would be ready for Saturday’s first rookie package, but Reid seemed optimistic he should be good to go.
Lastly, free agent signee and local Kansas City native, John Michael Gyllenborg, is still dealing with an injury he suffered at Wyoming last winter. From the sounds of it, the Rockhurst High School Graduate could be an IR candidate, thus redshirting his 2026 season.
