Chiefs Open to Dealing Wanya Morris

The Kansas City Chiefs have given 2023 draft pick Wanya Morris every opportunity to become a starter at both tackle spots. It appears that both sides have agreed that his future in Kansas City has come to an abrupt end.

Wanya Morris had so much promise coming out of Oklahoma, and the Chiefs all but handed him the starting left tackle job to open his career, but he was overmatched and never seemed to adjust to the speed of the NFL. Injuries and bad play led to missed opportunities, and now the Chiefs have given his agent free rein to find a trade partner so Morris can continue his career in another uniform.

The 2023 draft pick was a highly touted tackle, and the Chiefs used a third-round selection to find their next starting tackle. However, he could never find his footing. Over the last two years, the Chiefs’ offensive line has battled inconsistency and poor play.

Yes, some of that was injury-related, including Morris, who has missed numerous games in his young career. Now he faces an uncertain future, but it’s clear with Josh Simmons at right tackle and veteran Jaylen Moore that the Chiefs feel that Morris has no chance to make the 2026 roster.

Further, with young tackles Esa Pole and undrafted Kahil Benson, who has some of the same traits as Pole. He was outstanding at Indiana last season, and it’s a big mystery as to why he wasn’t drafted. Also in the mix is undrafted tackle Chukwuebuka Godrick

He spent last season on injured reserve, but at this point he has a chance to be a back-up. Either way, the options presented to the Chiefs made this a simple decision to allow his agent to find another NFL team to play for in 2026.

The departure will clear roughly $1.7M in cap space this season, so there are added benefits in cutting ties with Morris.
