The Kansas City Chiefs had two goals this offseason: to create cap space and acquire more draft picks. On Wednesday morning, they achieved both objectives.

The Los Angeles Rams coveted Trent McDuffie and made him their top trade target heading into the start of free agency on Monday. That’s the day legal tampering begins. In the trade, Kansas City receives the Rams’ 2026 first-round pick (#29), a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick this year, and a 2027 third-round pick.

In all, the Chiefs will enter the 2026 NFL Draft with nine draft picks, including three 5th-round selections.

With this trade, the Kansas City Chiefs creates $13.6 Million in additional cap space to sign potential free agents next week. McDuffie is a California native, and the chance to go home made sense for both the player and the Chiefs.

The big question about this move is whether General Manager Brett Veach will work on getting a deal for free agent cornerback Jaylen Watson. He’s set to hit the market Monday, and I would be hard pressed if he’s not the Chiefs’ highest priority to retain among all their free agents.

Kansas City now has a pair of 2026 first-round picks, and in all will have three players selected within the Top 40 picks. This should give the Chiefs maneuverability in the draft, allowing them to move up or down in April.
