The Case for Tyreek Hill

In 2019, former wide receiver Tyreek Hill was a key cog in the Chiefs’ offense, helping them win Super Bowl LIV. With the Miami Dolphins releasing him today, it’s not a long shot that, if healthy, he could reunite with his former quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

Let’s knock the obvious out of the column. At 32 years old, Tyreek Hill remains one of the top receivers in the NFL. Yes, he’s coming off an ACL and kneecap injury, and to date, we have no idea what his rehab process looks like.

Kansas City is in desperate need of receiver help. In 2026, they have only three wide receivers under contract, and one of them might not be eligible this season. For now, Jalen Royals, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice remain the only signed options for Kansas City.

The Chiefs would like to bring back Tyquan Thornton, but he’s a restricted free agent. After his success in Kansas City a year ago, he could be a popular candidate to sign with another team.

Rice faced accusations on social media that were removed, and honestly, we have no idea what the Chiefs, the NFL, or the Dallas County District Attorney has seen to terminate his plea agreement.

That aside, Hill would make a lot of sense for the Chiefs. With Eric Bieniemy returning and Chad O’Shea as the team’s new wide receiver coach, I’m dancing with illusions about what a wide receiver crew of Hill, Thornton, Rice, Worthy, and Royals could do within the Chiefs’ offense.

If Kansas City signs a free-agent running back, such as Breece Hall, and Travis Kelce returns, the only question mark, besides Mahomes’ start date, will be right tackle.

Now, adding Hill comes with significant baggage. He’s faced multiple civil suits, and he’s managed to stay in the limelight off the field in Miami. On the plus side, Hill is a workout warrior, always gives his all on the field, and if he stays within those lines, any team in the NFL would add him to the mix.

For the Chiefs, and in particular Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach, this will ultimately be their decision. If healthy, Hill and Mahomes could create magic and strike fear into the AFC.

If Kansas City wants to push the envelope, it would need to get Hill and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, to give the Chiefs a cap-friendly one-year deal. It’s not a lock that Hill is ready by opening day, but since his surgery was last October, it’s an easy assumption that he could be available to start the season.

Then again, Hill is the biggest risk/reward option the Chiefs could face with his addition to the roster. I’m assuming Hill wants to return to Kansas City. If so, Hill will be an attractive option for every AFC and NFC contender.

Whenever he makes his decision, NFL teams will have to weigh the benefits of adding Hill against the life he would give up away from the game and the attributes he brings to an offense, especially one he has so much familiarity with.

I’m on the fence about adding Hill, and sources indicate that Kansas City is more likely not to make a move.

Regardless, it’s worth bringing him to Kansas City and letting the medical staff assess his off-season rehab to determine whether he’ll be ready for training camp.

So, is this a viable option for both sides to reach a deal?

I have my doubts, but I would not rule it out.
