Chiefs Tab Murray to be New Running Backs Coach

In a big departure from the Andy Reid coaching tree, the offense is going to get some new blood on the coaching staff. Per Jordan Schultz, Kansas City has hired DeMarco Murray to become the Chiefs’ new running back coach.

Head Coach Andy Reid hasn’t always been the best at going outside the family tree regarding coaching hires. However, he continues to shake up the offensive coaching staff. First, the team hired Eric Bieniemy and his fiery energy to replace Matt Nagy as Offensive Coordinator.

Then, Reid hired former Cleveland Browns Wide Receivers Coach Chad O’Shea, who will be a key member of the staff as the Chiefs hope to rebuild their receiving group. Late Wednesday evening, @Jordan Schultz reported that Oklahoma Sooners Running Back coach DeMarco Murray will take on that role for Kansas City.

Murray, who spent seven years in the NFL with multiple teams, will replace Todd Pinkston, who struggled as the Chiefs’ running backs coach. Murray, who had success at Oklahoma and the NFL as a top-tier running back, should be able to bring new energy to what will be an incomplete running back room.

Only last year’s seventh-round pick, Brashard Smith, is signed. Murray should attract some high-quality running backs in free agency. He’s spent most of his coaching career at Oklahoma, working with two top-notch coaches, Lincoln Riley and Brett Venerable.

In Kansas City, the offensive staff makeup has changed significantly, and it appears that only Tight End Coach Tom Melvin and Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck remain for the upcoming season.

Again, this is a big departure for Reid, who realized that change was necessary to get the Chiefs’ offense back on track. Reid remains the CEO, but the addition of Bieniemy, O’Shea, and now Murray suggests he’s building a committee of offensive minds rather than relying solely on a single voice.
