Trey Smith Gets New Deal with Chiefs

After placing the franchise tag on All-Pro Guard Trey Smith in the spring, the Kansas City Chiefs had hoped they could strike a long-term deal with their highly valued target before today’s deadline. With the hours shrinking, they extended him to a record setting four-year extension.

There was never a doubt that the Kansas City Chiefs and All-Pro Guard Trey Smith would be able to come to a long-term agreement. With a 3:00 CST deadline to sign their franchise-tagged player, according to Jordan Schultz, Smith signed a four-year extension worth $94 million with $70 million in guarantees.

The Chiefs have now locked down another premium offensive lineman. Before the start of the 2024 season, the team inked Center, Creed Humphrey, to a long-term contract. Smith and Humphrey are the anchor of the offensive line, and now neither has to worry about their future.

For Smith, he indicated all along that he hoped to remain in Kansas City, and the Chiefs structured a deal that allows them to focus on other areas of the rostee including cornerback Trent McDuffie, who has the same agent as Smith, and pass rusher, George Karlaftis.

This is a significant move by the Chiefs who continue to retain key talent to keep their dynsasty in tact. Smith was a former sixth round pick, but he’s been a starter since he was drafted in 2021. He was instrumental in reshaping the Chiefs offensive line after their embarasing Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Bucs.

He, along with Humphrey, became instant starters, and the Chiefs organization had zero intention of letting either become NFL free agents. This move also should give the Chiefs some cap room this season to pursue other potential free agents they could add to their 2025 roster.

One name that has risen is former Denver Broncos Safety, Justin Simmons. Kansas City would like to add another veteran in the secondary, and after playing in Atlanta last season, he remains a free agent.
