Exclusive: Chiefs Meet with Buckeye

The Kansas City Chiefs continue interviewing potential draft picks. Chiefs Blitz has learned that one big man could fill the team’s most significant off-season need.

With the NFL Combine ending on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs have been busy working the room and zeroing in on offensive linemen. At the top of the list might be left tackle, and one player who could solve the position problems of the past could slide to the Chiefs.

Ohio State Buckeyes left tackle Josh Simmons is one of the more prominent question marks of the NFL Draft. He tore his ACL in October, and his timeline to return remains up in the air. However, he’s drawing lots of interest from NFL teams.

Saturday morning, he spoke to reporters at the NFL Combines, and he thinks he’s ahead of schedule. He stated he intends to give NFL scouts a good pro day in the spring. After the injury, he left the team to focus on rehab.

ChiefsBlitz.com has learned exclusively that Simmons met with the Kansas City Chiefs at the NFL Combine. He would be a perfect fit as the primary protector for Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs have had a revolving door at left tackle since they cut Eric Fisher after Super Bowl LV. The move at the time opened the door for the trade that brought Orlando Brown, Jr. to Kansas City. However, his contract demands didn’t mesh with the Chiefs.

The Chiefs have met with several tackle prospects or will have an extended interview in Kansas City. Those names include Kansas Tackle Logan Brown and North Carolina Tackle Anthony Belton.

They have also shown strong interest in the University of Minnesota Left Tackle, Aireontae Ersery. However, there is some concern about his medicals. He did not speak to reporters on Saturday.

However, landing Simmons in the first round at #31 would be a stroke of luck. The Chiefs might likely have to move up in the first round to grab Simmons. Kansas City would need to be comfortable with his rehab and timeline to play football again.

Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach have been searching for a solution at left tackle. In 2023, they drafted Oklahoma Tackle Wanya Morris. In 2024, they drafted BYU left Tackle Kingsley Suamataia.

Neither could hold onto the starting left tackle job. To help, the Chiefs signed D.J. Humphries, but he could not stay healthy, and the Chiefs had to lean on Guard Joe Thuney to play left tackle.

He was great until the Super Bowl, which showed he was a guard attempting to play tackle.

Veach indicated on Tuesday that if a player they felt could impact the Chiefs in the first round started to fall, he’d make a move to nab that prospect.

Thus, Simmons is a name to watch for the Chiefs.
