Chiefs Appear Willing to Keep Their Prize Free Agent

Kansas City Chiefs Guard Trey Smith is one of the biggest free agents hitting the market. He’s expected to become the highest-paid guard in the NFL, and at one point, it appeared he and the Chiefs would be unable to work out a new deal. However, that might have changed.

As we saw last year, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line held together until Super Bowl LIX, when the Philadelphia Eagles bullied them. That could impact the team’s ability to sign pending free agent Trey Smith.

Smith is one of the game’s best offensive linemen, and the former sixth-round pick is expected to break his bank account with a new contract. His agents reportedly feel he can garner a deal exceeding $100 million in value with guarantees in the $60-75M range.

If so, the Chiefs would have to rework their salary cap projections for 2025 to get a deal done with their All-Pro Guard. However, that won’t be easy because he’ll be in demand from other NFL teams.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ General Manager has to navigate not only Smith but also his other 19 free agents. Granted, they won’t be able to sign all of them, but Smith has to be atop the list. If the Chiefs will protect their franchise quarterback, Smith is virtually irreplaceable.

The price will be steep, but the Chiefs must move some money around to retain their top talent.

Veach indicated he’s trying to lock down Hollywood Brown on a new deal. The Buffalo Bills, who are also targeting him, will give him stiff competition.

For now, the focus is on Smith, and recent rumblings suggest the Chiefs will do everything they can to keep him in Chiefs uniform.

One thing is clear: the Chiefs likely won’t tag Smith, so they’ll have three weeks to get something done!
