On Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs are slated to play the Denver Broncos in their regular-season finale against their AFC West division rival. The game could be of significant interest to the New Orleans Saints, who are looking for a new head coach and appear to be looking at the Chiefs staff for answers.
Offensive Coordinator Matt Nagy has guided the Chiefs offense to back-to-back Super Bowls. He’s done so in the most chaotic fashion, which is impressive and of the highest caliber of his coaching abilities.
When Eric Bieniemy was the OF, he had Tyreek Hill, a solid offensive line, and a younger and wilder Patrick Mahomes. Running that show was easy. However, Matt Nagy has been a steady ship without all those weapons, injuries, and inconsistency in the last two seasons.
Yes, we all know Andy Reid runs the show on offense, but Nagy, who has been with the Chiefs for three years, could become a head coach again in 2025. Per ESPN Inside Dianna Russini, one team indicates the New Orleans Saints would like to interview Nagy next week for their soon-to-be vacant head coaching position.
Nagy was the head coach of the Chicago Bears for three seasons and had tremendous success with Mitch Trubisky as his starting quarterback. After being fired, he returned to the Chiefs as quarterbacks coach and was reunited with Patrick Mahomes.
When Bienemy left the Chiefs to join the UCLA Bruins, Reid promoted Nagy.
In his second stint in Kansas City, though fans often view him as a detriment to the offense, he’s had to manage so many inside and outside forces, not to mention the expectation of the Chiefs main Mantra – Super Bowl or Bust, that should be a positive in the next coaching hire.
The Saints would be wise to hire Nagy, but they also highly consider Detroit Lions, Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn. But the Saints need to fix their offense, and Nagy would be a terrific choice.
Black Monday in the NFL will arrive with swift announcements from owners looking to find their next head coach. As many as eight jobs could become available, and Nagy likely will get several interviews. The same could be said about Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who has indicated he’d like a second chance to become an NFL head coach.
If the Chiefs lose both coordinators, Reid likely has successors already in mind to fill the coaching voids if Nagy and Spags become head coaches.
