On Tuesday, the Kansas City Chiefs signed kicker Matt Wright to their practice squad. Sunday’s hero in Carolina, Spencer Shrader, tweaked his hamstring on Monday, and it’s not certain he can play against the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday.
The injury bug keeps hitting the Kansas City Chiefs like a freight train. Kicker Spencer Shrader tweaked his hamstring in a workout on Monday. So today, Kansas City signed former Chiefs kicker, Matt Wright to their practice squad. The move allows the Chiefs to elevate him for Friday’s game and keep Shrader on the 53-man roster.
All-Pro Kicker Harrison Butker is still recovering from his recent meniscus surgery, but he’s expected to return when the Chiefs travel to Cleveland to face the Browns next month.
In other news, the Chiefs officially signed DJ Humphries, who will number 70, and added him to the active roster. Kansas City was at 52, heading into last Sunday’s game against the Panthers, so they didn’t need to make a corresponding roster move.
However, backup tight end Peyton Hendershot was placed on Injured Reserve with a calf injury, so the Chiefs added Tight End Baylor Cupp to join Wright on the practice squad. In doing so, the Chiefs released former draft pick left tackle Lucas Niang and Defensive End Truman Jones from their practice squad and released Cam Thomas from the 53-man roster.
By releasing Thomas, signing Humphries, and placing Hendershot on injured reserve, the Chiefs’ roster has reached 51. The expected return of Charles Omenihu and Isiah Pacheco for the Raiders game would fill out the 53-man roster.
The flurry of roster moves comes at a bad time for the Chiefs who have a short week to prepare for the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday.
