First Fortson and Now Wiley Out with ACL

If the Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl this season, it might be because they overcame the loss of yet another season-ending injury to one of their offensive players. This week alone, the Chiefs lost backup tight end Jody Fortson and now Jared Wiley tore his ACL and is out for the year.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been decimated by injuries from Hollywood Brown, Rashee Rice, Isiah Pacheco, JuJu Smith Schuster, Joshua Williams, Jody Fortson, and Jared Wiley. It’s impressive they remain undefeated, but they are pushing roster limits that will force them to keep making roster moves.

Wiley tore his ACL in practice on Friday, and their fifth-string tight end, Peyton Hendershot, formerly of the Dallas Cowboys, will become the third-string tight end on the roster. He’s not known as a pass rusher, but he is an exceptional blocker and he should be able to allow the Chiefs to run 13 personnel on offense.

The good news is with the trade deadline three days away, General Manager Brett Veach could trade for another tight end or perhaps pluck one off another practice squad roster. The Chiefs continue their band-aid approach to the 53-man roster, and at some point you have to believe their luck could run out.

Yet, Head Coach Andy Reid has made the adjustments that have kept his team perfect, but even has to wonder if the NFL Gods just don’t want his team to three-peat.

Either way, Hendershot is the next man up, and he will learn on the job on Monday Night when the Chiefs face the Tampa Bay Bucs at Arrowhead.

With the addition of Hendershot to the active roster, the Chiefs signed veteran Tight End Anthony Firkser to their practice squad.
