On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs ensured the most accurate kicker in team history would stay with the team for a long time. Harrison Butker and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year contract extension to make the three-time Super Bowl Champion the highest-paid position in the NFL.
There’s little doubt about the value the Kansas City Chiefs place on special teams. Most notably, they have one of the best kickers of all time on their roster. Before Harrison Butker could test the free agent market after the 2024 season, the Chiefs extended his contract for four years at a value of $26.5 million. The deal includes a guarantee of $17.5 million. Butker will still earn $3.9 million this season, so the extension begins in 2025.
Butker, who acted as his agent, negotiated the deal with General Manager Brett Veach. The deal makes perfect sense for the Chiefs and Butker. He’s one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history, and he’s shown success in clutch situations during the team’s current Super Bowl run since 2029.
With the Chiefs attempting to become the first three-peat champions in NFL history, it’s likely Butker, who was nearly perfect last season, will follow a long line of successful kickers in team history. One of them, Jan Stenerud, is the only kicker to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio; the other, Nick Lowery, is a member of the Chiefs Hall of Honor.
Butker isn’t the only player whose deals might be extended. Per the Athletic, Linebacker Nick Bolton, Center Creed Humphries, and Guard Trey Smith are in line for new deals, ensuring they remain with the Chiefs for the foreseeable future.
