After spending most of the week in Germany, Travis Kelce arrived in St. Joe, ready for the start of training camp. In true Kelce style, he returned one of his signature looks and returned to work.
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Is anyone having a better year than Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce? Back-to-back Super Bowl Champion, traveling the world to support his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, has the top podcast on the planet, he’s a part-time actor, and now has a chance to become a three-peat champion.
At first glance, I love Kelce’s look. I respect the man for supporting his partner worldwide and coming to training camp in shape and ready to attack the quest ahead.
Entering his 12th NFL season, Kelce could have easily mailed it in and reported to camp a little late. He could miss all of training camp, ignore the preseason, and still produce touchdowns and a thousand-yard season.
Yet, that’s not how he’s wired. As he stated multiple times, he loves practicing with his teammates. He may not enjoy the grind of another training camp, but he still goes all out in every practice snap, and he’s a constant tutor to his younger counterparts on offense.
He goes the extra mile.
For example, he often consoled Wide Receiver Kadarius Toney last season, who had a rough 2023. He spoke highly of guys after they made mistakes and showed us that he’s a true leader and the best teammate. He never quits on himself or the guys he interacts with on the field.
Again, Kelce has earned to coast the last two years of his career. Instead, armed with a big contract through the 2025 season, he’s not taking that for granted. He understands the faith the Chiefs have put in him, and he’s given them zero reason to believe he can keep putting up big numbers and helping the team win more Super Bowls.
Head Coach Andy Reid has always said he prefers Travis to be himself. He’s also a fan of his relationship with Swift. He’s commented multiple times that they are suitable for each other, and despite the enormous attention both receive, he stated emphatically that Kelce is focused and grounded on his day job.
Making tens of millions of dollars and dating the biggest star in the world, Kelce has remained unchanged by the extra attention. He’s just living his life.
There’s a lesson somewhere that we should pay attention to: It’s okay to chase your dreams and to be happy doing what you love.
It’s easy to think Kelce will have the happy ending to the career he desires, and his relationship with Swift offers him a real chance to be with his soulmate well beyond his playing career.
Until then, though, El Travidor is ready to attack the 2024 season, ring the Super Bowl bell again, and keep loving the life he has made for himself.
I’m glad El Travador is doing it with the Chiefs in Kansas City.
