Dallas Prosecutors charged Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice on eight counts stemming from his multi-car accident over Easter weekend. What happens next remains to be seen, but Rice has a lengthy road ahead regardless of the outcome his lawyer can negotiate.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Police Department issued an arrest warrant and officially charged the Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver with eight counts stemming from his car accident over Easter weekend. Of the counts, six counts of collision involving bodily injury, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and one count of aggravated assault, according to the arrest warrant. All of the charges are felonies in the state of Texas.
Per Texas law, Rice could face two to twenty years in prison and pay fines up to $15,000. Current SMU player Theodore Knox, who received the same eight counts for the incident, was also charged with the six-car crash.
Local Dallas Attorney and State Senator Royce West has been hired to represent Rice. At this time, it is unknown if he also represents Mr. Knox. Either way, the police investigation uncovered several other facts that had not been disclosed.
The police report indicated they found marijuana in both vehicles, as well as various credit cards, a $16,500 check, a diamond chain, and a copy of the Kansas City Chiefs playbook.
Rice will likely surrender to authorities now that charges are filed. He has cooperated with Dallas PD, admitting guilt and being willing to make restitution. That admission likely begins a process to plea down the charges so Rice does not receive jail time but will pay fines to the court.
Further, the NFL will have its say regarding Rice once the two sides reach an agreement. If they do not, the case could go to trial.
Rice made a statement last week, and I’m sure prosecutors took that into account. Communication with his counsel has been ongoing since Rice came forward.
What happens next is up for debate, but once this matter is settled, Rice will not be playing a full 2024 schedule with his teammates.
