Hollywood Brown Made the Right Choice in Joining the Chiefs

NFL Free agency is a week old, and the Kansas City Chiefs premier free agent to date, Hollywood Brown, signed his new contract and met with the local media. His words were humble, and he appreciated the opportunity to join a winning culture.

After stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals, Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown agreed to a one-year $11M contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The deal has a base pay of $7 million with incentives. If it’s like other contracts General Manager Brett Veach has structured recently, if Brown hits the total value, it’s a safe bet the Chiefs will be three-peat Super Bowl champions.

Brown spoke to the media today, and what struck me was his sincerity and readiness to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes. He also acknowledged his humble beginnings, which make him an ideal fit for the Chiefs.

He was almost a Chief back in 2019. He admitted the team spent considerable time with him ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft, but that didn’t pan out. He’s glad for the second chance to play with the Chiefs.

“There were quite a few teams. I was really leaving it up to my agent. Kansas City was a place I told him I wanted to be if there was an opportunity, and it kind of just unfolded. I let him do his job and God made it happen,” he said on Monday.

Still he could have made more money elsewhere, instead he chose to play with the Chiefs.

“When the Chiefs are interested in you, you gotta look at them… I can go get some money at other places, but at the end of the day, it’s about winning,” Brown said.

Of course, the chance to play with Patrick Mahomes was a critical factor in his decision. However, he also admitted to growing personally while in Arizona, which made him realize he hadn’t come close to playing his best football.

“There’s a lot of my game, and I feel like I haven’t had a chance to show yet,” he said.

That’s good news for the Chiefs’ offense, which needs another splash receiver. Brown has immeasurable talents, and this offense needs a Tyreek Hill route runner to allow Mahomes the opportunity to stretch the field.

Brown’s ability to work in open space should allow Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice more room to torment opposing defenses.

Brown, who is from Texas, will work out with Mahomes soon to get a head start on the offseason. After all, the shorter he can adjust to learning the Mahomes Magic on offense, the quicker he can contribute.

“From the outside looking in, it seems like Pat is very passionate. And I’m a very passionate person. He wants to win, do whatever it takes to win,” Brown elaborated when talking about Mahomes.

In the press conference, he indicated his humble beginnings, including the money he left on the table to sign with Kansas City. He told reporters he grew up with no money and appreciated the money he’s earned to date as an NFL player.

His agent understood the Chiefs’ cap restrictions before agreeing to a contract. Even though Brown can be a free agent at the end of this season, I get the sense that, just like Veach did with Drue Tranquill last season, he could get a similar extension to remain in Kansas City.

Either way, Brown is a perfect fit for Kansas City, and the team added another talented individual who isn’t afraid to buy into the Chiefs Championship DNA!
