Chiefs Sign Veteran Tight End to Bolster the Offense

After being silent on the opening day of free agency, the Kansas City Chiefs added a former Alabama University standout and second-round draft pick and retained another defensive player on day two.

If there was one player from the 2019 NFL Draft, I hoped the Kansas City Chiefs would select, it was Alabama Tight End Irv Smith, Jr. The Crimson Tide standout slipped to the second round, not based on potential but injuries, making him a bargain selection by the Minnesota Vikings. However, after missing the entire 2021 season with a torn meniscus, he signed a one-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals last season.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Chiefs signed him to a one-year deal, hoping he can resurrect his career in Kansas City. There are no downsides to the Smith signing. If healthy, he might not be the dominating force he was at Alabama, but catching passes from Patrick Mahomes and learning from Travis Kelce might be the golden ticket to a bigger payday.

His decision to sign with the Chiefs was the lure of chasing a Super Bowl Ring. After all, Smith won lots of games at Alabama, but he also understood what is expected to play at the highest level on every play.

This signing likely means Blake Bell won’t return to the Chiefs this season.

In other Chiefs News, Kansas City has re-signed backup safety Deon Bush to a one-year contract.
