With free agency kicking off on Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t add any players, but they lost two key members from their recent Super Bowl run. Though both can be replaced, each will be missed.
The Kansas City Chiefs didn’t make any noise on the first day of free agency, but they did lose a pair of veteran contributors when they lost Nick Allegretti and Tommy Townsend.
Allegretti was one of the heroes of Super Bowl LVIII. He entered the playoffs, filling in for Guard Joe Thuney, who left in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round. The five-year Kansas City veteran was asked to step up, and he did just that.
Thuney never made it back on the field in the postseason. Yet, he tore his UCL in the Super Bowl and gutted it out in the Chiefs overtime Super Bowl victory. He was one of the unsung heroes of their playoff run, and he was rewarded with a 3-year, $16 million deal from the Washington Commanders.
Punter Tommy Townsend also officially made his move away from the Chiefs when he signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the Houston Texans. Townsend has been a starter for the Chiefs since he took over the punting duties from Dustin Colquitt.
Though he struggled in the first part of his career in Kansas City, he was one of the best punters in the NFL in 2022 and 2023. His departure from Kansas City was sealed when the Chiefs signed former Buffalo Bills draft pick Matt Araiza last month.
