With free agency set to begin next week, the Kansas City Chiefs made news late Saturday night when they agreed to a new five-year deal with three-time Super Bowl champion Chris Jones.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ legal tampering period begins on Monday. This weekend, they already signed Drue Tranquill to a three-year deal, and late Saturday night, per reports, the team agreed with free-agent defender Chris Jones.
The new five-year contract will make Jones the highest-paid defensive Tackler in the NFL. The new contract guarantees Jones $95 Million, thus, in essence, a three-year contract.
Jones tweeted a few nuggets to Chiefs fans about the clock ticking, but around 9:37 local time, he put pen to paper and agreed to the new contract with Kansas City.
The Chiefs are pushing the limits of their salary cap in getting this deal done, and that could mean l’Jarius Sneed could soon be dealt before the new league year starts on Wednesday at 3:00 CST. It is reported that the Detroit Lions might be the front-runner to land Sneed.
Now that General Manager Brett Veach knows Jones is in the fold, he has options to free up more money. He could extend contracts for veterans Travis Kelce, Justin Reid, and Joe Thuney. There is also flexibility in converting some of Mahomes’ 2024 payout.
Though Jones likes to play with the fan base, there was never a doubt the two sides would not reach a deal. Jones has made it clear numerous times, including at the Chiefs Super Bowl parade, for those paying attention that he wants to play his entire career in a uniform.
This season didn’t start great for Jones and the Chiefs, but with another Lombardi on the shelf, they can become the first three-peat Super Bowl Champion with their star defender on the field.
