Chiefs Extend Special Teams Coach

The Kansas City Chiefs have been busy since their Super Bowl LVIII Overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers. They’e already locked up some key pieces to their coaching staff and on Friday, they did it again.

On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs extended the contract of Assistant Head Coach / Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub to a three-year contract extension. The deal will keep him in Kansas City for four more seasons.

Earlier in the week, the Chiefs extended the contract of Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Defensive Line Coach Joe Cullen was given three-year extensions, and ChiefsBlitz.com has learned Cornerbacks Coach Dave Merritt was given a three-year extension.

Even though the parade on Wednesday was marred with tragedy, the football business never stops churning.

Toub has been with Andy Reid since he arrived in Kansas City. He’s generally regarded as the best in the business, and his work on special teams this season was outstanding. Punter Tommy Townsend and Kicker Harrison Butker are the best tandem in the NFL, largely thanks to Toub.

Having the core coaching group under contract for the next four seasons matches what we’ve heard about Head Coach Andy Reid and his desire to coach until he’s 70. He turns 66 in March and will likely get a pay bump soon that locks him through the end of the 2027 season.
