Chiefs News: Coaches Get Extensions and Chris Jones has Three-Peat in Mind

Before Wednesday’s parade, the Kansas City Chiefs extended contracts for three defensive coaches. The biggest, of course, was Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, but two other coaches were also extended.

Lost in the news of the parade, the Kansas City Chiefs locked down three key defensive staff members. Last week, Defensive Line Coach Joe Cullen signed a three-year extension. The deal took him out of the running for the Defensive Coordinator job in Seattle.

The big prize for the Chiefs was the three-year extension the team announced for Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on Wednesday. It will likely make him the highest-paid DC in the NFL. He’s been the prime architect of the Chiefs’ defense that won three Super Bowls in five seasons under his tutelage.

Further, Chiefs Blitz has learned that Defensive Backs Coach Dave Merritt also received a three-year extension. His work with L’Jarius Sneed and All-Pro slot cornerback Trent McDuffie has been stellar. The tandem won back-to-back Super Bowls and are considered the best duo in the NFL. Sneed will be an unrestricted free agent, and he’s made it clear, he wants top dollar for his services.

At this time, it’s not known if any other defensive coaches were extended or on the offensive side of the ball, but I would expect some tweaking to the staff to be done. While this group stayed chiefly together during the dynasty era, sometimes adding fresh eyes and talented coaches allowed growth.

We have yet to receive much intel on the possible return of Eric Bieniemy to the offensive coaching staff, and as we wrote last week, I remain skeptical of his return.

In other Chiefs news, Chris Jones made it clear during the parade that he intends to get a deal done with the Chiefs, and he wants to be the centerpiece of the defense in 2024 to make a run for an NFL record of three Super Bowl titles in a row.
