After the Kansas City Chiefs made their waiver claims on Monday, they quickly signed 13 players to their practice squad. They still have room to add three players, but they brought back mostly familiar faces for their taxi squad.
The Kansas City Chiefs went to work Monday, quickly signing the first phase of their practice squad. The 13 players cover a wide range of roster positions that could be called up if there’s an injury to someone on the 53-man roster. Two notables highlight the practice squad: veteran edge rusher Emmnaual Ogbah and fan favorite wide receiver Andrew Armstrong.
Ogbah was cut Monday, but as a vested veteran, he was not subject to waivers, allowing the Chiefs to keep a player on the 53-man roster, knowing both sides had agreed to bring him back on Tuesday. Armstrong was the best receiver in three preseason games, and the Chiefs rolled the dice that when they cut him on Monday, nobody would put in a roster claim.
The gamble paid off,ff and he could get serious playing time. I’d be curious how he and Patrick Mahomes could work together, given his speed and body size. As it stands now, the Chiefs’ wide receiver room, while talented, remains unproven, and I believe Armstrong could crash the party in a good way.
One of the most intriguing practice squad additions is Philadelphia Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren. Though he was injured in week one in 2025, he did earn a Super Bowl ring when the Eagles defeated the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. He signed with the Buffalo Bills in March, but they cut him on Monday. He came into the NFL as a linebacker, but the Eagles switched him to fullback.
The Chiefs, who plan to install a run-first, pass-second offense, could use a thumper at the line of scrimmage, and VanSumeren could be an interesting addition to the rushing attack in Kansas City. The fact that Kansas City kept three high-quality running backs and brought back Jaydn Ott to the practice squad was a wise addition.
Of note, the Chiefs have not officially reported VanSumeren’s signing in their initial release to the media, but that should come on Wednesday when the team returns to practice.
