Ankle Issues Will Sideline Chiefs All Pro

In the wake of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 23-20 overtime win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, the team had to deal with numerous injuries. With a short week ahead, it appears Guard Trey Smith won’t play Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Kansas City Chiefs had a battle on their hand on Sunday, and they needed every man on the roster to defeat the Colts. However, they also appear to have lost their starting right guard, Trey Smith, who is suffering from both a low and high ankle sprain.

Smith was injured in the second quarter when a Colts defender rolled his ankle. He tried to come back and play but ultimately did not return for the second half. This is a massive blow to the Chiefs offense.

Fortunately, Mike Caliendo has enough starting experience to fill in for Smith. However, the Chiefs will be razor thin at the guard position and could consider giving left tackle back-up, Jaylen Moore, some reps in practice on Tuesday.

The Chiefs will travel to Dallas on Wednesday for their Thanksgiving Day showdown against the Cowboys. It’s doubtful Smith will travel with the team, but the mini bye week ahead will determine if he can play at some point in December.

Smith has also been dealing with a back issue that didn’t clear up entirely during the Chiefs’ Bye Week. With Caliendo the next man up, the Chiefs will likely get some reps for Hunter Nourzad, who has seen limited action to this point in his NFL career.

On Tuesday, Head Coach Andy Reid will speak to the media, and we should know about Smith’s injury.
