Chiefs Training Camp Offers New Opportunity for Chiefs

With the players taking a much-needed off day, I marvel at this franchise and how successful they’ve become not only at winning but also at managing the challenging financial aspects of a perennial Super Bowl team.

Tonight, NFL Football kicks off as the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers start the preseason at the annual Hall of Fame Game. A week from Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs begin their preseason against the Cardinals in Arizona.

As the dog days of training camp enter another week, the Kansas City Chiefs seem focused and prepared for the upcoming challenge of completely dismissing any thoughts of failure this season.

Yes, they were blitzed by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, but sometimes a significant loss can lead a franchise to a new path. Now the goal stays the same: Super Bowl or bust every season in Kansas City.

That’s a far cry from the dark years when just making the postseason as a wild card was the primary goal. Division titles were rare, but under Andy Reid, the Chiefs aim to extend their streak of consecutive AFC West titles to ten.

Take a moment to consider that.

If you’re like me, who had to wait five decades to see the Chiefs hoist another Lombardi Trophy, we’re living in unprecedented times for a new generation of the Chiefs Kingdom.

Since Patrick Mahomes arrived, winning has become the norm, and Super Bowl titles have followed.

The Chiefs are the best organization and team in the NFL. They have the top player (Mahomes), the best head coach (Reid), a risk-taking general manager (Brett Veach), a team president (Mark Donovan) who markets this franchise to generate the highest revenue, and an owner (Clark Hunt) willing to spend big to keep the core of the team together.

Honestly, the Kansas City Chiefs are the talk of the NFL, and their increased presence in primetime and streaming games speaks volumes. The Chiefs are a lucrative asset for the league, and interest in their 2025 season has never been higher.

After all, thirty-one other teams watched happily as the Eagles beat the Chiefs to end the year. As they look toward the 2025 season, they are confident that Kansas City is finished, and they won’t be winning Super Bowls anytime soon.

However, the men responsible for the franchise’s success probably don’t get enough credit for being the glue that holds this Dynasty together.

The history of the Chiefs before they arrived was one of a struggling franchise that missed multiple chances to break the glass ceiling, but poor draft choices, questionable free agent signings, and a lack of swagger to win.

That’s all changed, and I hope the Chiefs Kingdom understands and appreciates the state of this franchise. For me, I enjoy the behind-the-scenes aspect of the franchise. The business side of the Chiefs is a remarkable success story.

After all, revenue determines the composition of the roster. Despite the salary cap restrictions each year and the high salaries of the core players each season, the Chiefs remain a Super Bowl favorite year after year.

Yes, they’ve been to five Super Bowls since 2019, won three, and seem to have assembled their best roster since the Super Bowl IV team.

The Super Bowl-winning Len Dawson-led Chiefs in 1969 featured ten NFL Hall of Famers, including franchise founder Lamar Hunt and head coach Hank Stram.

The current era of Chiefs players might not reach that number, but it’s possible. Yes, I know the players don’t care about that, but it shows the similarities between decades of Chiefs football.

If you want to win Super Bowls, you need a Hall of Fame approach and Hall of Fame players who will eventually make it to Canton. That means the winning streak is likely to continue in Kansas City.
