13 Days to Camp: How Long Will Reid Coach Mahomes?

When you find yourself coaching the best player on the planet, it gives you a new perspective on time. Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid is living the NFL dream. His relationship with quarterback Patrick Mahomes has led to three Super Bowl titles. However, there is an end date to this dynamic duo.

I often tell Chiefs fans that the 50-year gap between Super Bowl wins was painful, emotionally draining, and frustrating. While other NFL cities experienced success, that wasn’t the case in Kansas City until Patrick Mahomes arrived in 2017.

With training camp less than two weeks away, Head Coach Andy Reid turned 67 in March. He currently ranks fourth in total wins (regular season and playoffs). He is just 23 victories shy of surpassing George ‘Papa Bear’ Hallas, who had 324 combined wins.

When Reid catches Halas, he’ll be nine games behind Bill Belichick, who is currently second all-time with 333 wins. That means he’d only be 14 wins behind Don Shula, who holds the coaching record with 347 wins.

That means if my math doesn’t mess up, Reid only needs 47 wins to surpass Shula. If we do the simple calculation, over the next three years, he’d have to average 16 wins each season to take the top spot on the win list. That’s been his average during their three-year run to the Super Bowl.

All this is possible because Reid has a generational quarterback in Mahomes. Since 2018, no quarterback in the NFL has more passing yards, touchdowns, division titles, conference titles, and Super Bowl wins.

This combination has been enjoyable to watch, but it can also be frustrating at times. Still, with Mahomes on the field, he boosts the odds of every game he plays to a 50/50 chance. Now, if we average the win total, that number is much higher.

That’s beyond my math abilities. All I know is that Mahomes is the best player in the game, and Reid plays a significant role in his success. What’s great about this partnership is how both have grown over time.

This offense was once unstoppable and full of fire. Then Tyreek Hill was traded, and the Chiefs still secured back-to-back Super Bowl victories.

Mahomes will turn 30 this year, and it’s time to consider how long he’ll stay in the NFL. He’s a Chiefs lifer, but his career will likely outlast Reid’s. Currently, the Chiefs’ head coach is under contract through the 2029 season. Therefore, Mahomes will be 34 when Reid’s current deal ends.

The Chiefs are in the middle of a dynasty we’ve never seen in Kansas City. If the ball had bounced a few different ways, they could easily have two more Super Bowl wins. But I’m not greedy, and I plan to enjoy this run until it ends.

This offseason, the Chiefs rebuilt their roster, and Mahomes appears more focused and motivated following his second Super Bowl blowout, which is a positive sign for the team. I’m sure his frustration mirrors his head coach.

As I mentioned yesterday, the 2025 roster is the best either of them has had in their impressive careers. This team has playmakers on both sides of the ball and substantial depth built through highly successful draft classes.

The Chiefs have also been aggressive in free agency, finding valuable players and retaining their superstars. In other words, the Chiefs are a perfect storm of success that’s built to keep winning.

For a franchise that starts and ends its season with a Super Bowl win or bust, maintaining harmony isn’t easy. Players can get frustrated, and the coaching staff might run out of ideas to improve, but somehow the team lives by another rule: “All for one and one for all”.

So, how much longer will it last?

That answer will be revealed in 2026 if tight end Travis Kelce retires. Then, this offense will need to adapt once again, possibly changing its approach. Kelce is the ultimate safety valve for the offense and a significant reason why Reid and Mahomes work so well together.

For now, we can put this conversation aside.
