Many expected the Kansas City Chiefs to make a move to sign a tackle or cornerback. Instead, they are signing former New England Patriots second-round pick Tyquan Thornton to their practice squad. He had over a dozen offers but chose to play catch with Patrick Mahomes.
Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach always has an eye to add talent to his roster or practice squad. After a disappointing loss on Sunday to the Buffalo Bills, the Chiefs intend to add former Baylor Wide Receiver Tyquan Thornton to their practice squad.
On Saturday, the 2023 second-round pick was released by the New England Patriots. Over the next 48 hours, ESPN reported he had over a dozen teams hoping to sign the talented and under-used receiver.
In the end, the lure of playing ball with Patrick Mahomes was too enticing. He’ll be rejoined by former teammates JuJu Smith-Schuster and Joshua Uche. When the Chiefs considered signing Thornton, Veach probably spoke to his current Patriots player to get their view on what happened in New England.
Based on the Patriots’ current record, I can see why the 24-year-old receiver is happy to join the defending back-to-back Super Champions.
Undoubtedly, the 6’1″ receiver can impact any offense—he’s just two years removed from a fabulous season at Baylor.
This might not be the last practice squad signing the Chiefs make this week. Per our friend, Aaron Wilson, the Arizona Cardinals waived tackle Charlie Heck on Monday. If that name sounds familiar, he’s the son of Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck.
