On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs added running back Samaje Perine and cornerback Eric Scott to their 2024 practice squad. Some familiar faces returned, but others did not.
Over the years, the Kansas City Chiefs have been very consistent in how they make up their practice squad. For the most part, Andy Reid and Brett Veach consider any player on that list the next man up.
That mentality has served them well over the years, and that explains why some familiar faces and even a 2024 sixth-round draft pick didn’t make the team.
Earlier in the day, the Chiefs added former Dallas Cornerback Eric Scott to the 53-man roster. To make room, the team cut 2023 draft pick Nic Jones. Running back Samaje Perine has yet to be added to the roster. Once he passes his physical, the Chiefs will likely place Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the Pup List or injured reserve.
The team announced on Wednesday that 15 players were signed to the practice squad. They still have one spot left, and that will go to Quarterback Bailey Zappe, who has yet to take his physical. Once that’s done, the practice squad is set for now.
So, who made the list?
Bailey, Emani (RB- Texas Christian)
Bozeman, Swayze (LB- Southern Mississippi)
Bush, Deon (S- Miami)
Christiansen, Cole (LB- Army)
Cupp, Baylor (TE- Texas Tech)
Dickerson, Matt (DT- UCLA)
Farrell, Neil (DT- Louisiana State)
Ingram, Keaontay (RB- Southern California)
Jones, Truman (DE- Harvard)
Lovett, Fabien (DT- Florida State)
Niang, Lucas (T- Texas Christian)
Remigio, Nikko (WR- Fresno State)
Ross, Justyn (WR- Clemson)
Taylor, Keith (CB- Washington)
Washington, Montrell (WR- Samford)
Godrick, Chukwuebuka (T- No College) International Player
The biggest surprise might be the omission of Sixth Round draft pick Kamal Hadden. He never found his footing in camp, and the Chiefs didn’t think he was worthy of a roster spot or a spot on the practice squad.
Other notables who didn’t make the list were running Back Louis Rees-Zammit, Wide Receiver Cornell Powel, and Quarterback Chris Oladokun. The Chiefs felt Zappe had more upside. Either way, the Chiefs have quality depth on the practice squad, and most of their signees were with the team until Tuesday’s cuts.
Two players Chiefs fans were clamoring for to make the 53-man roster, Nikko Remigio and Justyn Ross, were added to the practice squad. The addition of Ross is surprising because rumors suggested that he would sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Remigio was the team’s top return specialist and Special Teams Coach, Dave Taub, so it’s possible he could see time on the active roster sooner rather than later.
The Chiefs return to practice on Friday in preparation for the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
