Wednesday morning, Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and President Mark Donovan unveiled their Stadium vision for the future. GEHA Field at Arrowhead will get an $800 million makeover that increases profit and fan amenities inside and outside their iconic stadium.
With the Kansas City Royals set to move downtown to the crossroads district by the 2028 Baseball season, the Kansas City Chiefs announced Wednesday their vision to remodel GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium beginning in 2027. Though it won’t be a shiny new stadium like the Royals are proposing, the core and soul of Arrowhead remain true to its most recent renovation twenty years ago.
“What’s important to note about these changes is that the spirit of Arrowhead will not change. These upgrades will allow us to continue the tradition of providing one of the best gameday experiences in all professional sports and to preserve and enhance a whole new generation of Chiefs fans,” Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt stated earlier today.
The four drawings and video were made public today, and from the bird’s eye view, the upgrades will allow the Chiefs to profit from end suites inside and outside the playing field in both end zones.
In addition, they will enlarge both scoreboards, upgrade the club level, and create a 360-degree walkaround of the upper level. Parking will be increased, and accommodation for a better tailgate experience is also in the works.
However, the $800 million makeover, in which the Hunt Family will invest $300 Million and cover all cost overrides in the building process, depends on one key factor. To get this done, they, like the Royals, need the sports tax approved on April 2nd.
Both Hunt and Donovan clarified that the sales tax must be approved for this project to move forward. Further, Hunt clarified that the Chiefs would only sign a new lease in Jackson County with the stadium tax.
“We would not be willing to sign a lease without the financing to properly renovate and re-imagine the stadium,” Hunt said. “The financing puzzle is very important to us.”
What that means remains to be seen, but the vote is vital to both the Chiefs and Royals desire to build one stadium and renovate the other. There is opposition to the tax, but both teams are working diligently and together to push the positives of continuing the Jackson County stadium tax.
Setting aside the politics of the moment, the Chiefs made a wise decision and not falling into the pitfalls of spending more, when honestly, Arrowhead has good bones, and it’s impossible to recreate the sight lines for the fans.

Don’t get me wrong, I would like a shiny new stadium with a roof that could house a Super Bowl and a Final Four, but that wasn’t on the table. Still, it was discussed, and like most fans, they love the fact Arrowhead is uncovered, and they don’t care about the elements of the weather changes from hot to cold during the NFL season. Today’s vision was the right move with the team in its Dynasty phase and winners of back-to-back Super Bowl titles.
As mentioned, the Chiefs won’t begin construction until 2027. Once the Royals leave, they will pay for the demolition of Royals Stadium and begin construction on their upgrades. Remember, the Chiefs are hosting six games in the World Cup in 2026, and stadium alterations must be met to accommodate the field size FIFA has demanded from each host city.
For those who are underwhelmed by today’s vision, to be honest, I’d much rather see the Hunt family put their resources into the coaches and players. This window of excellence is a first for this franchise, with a chance to three-peat Super Bowl Titles; that’s where the money needs to go. Thus, I say allocate the funds to keep building a winner year in and year out.
